The True Canadian Sport

The only valid thing you can do to prove your Canadian citizenship, is to test your love for hockey. I don't care if you love your home team or any other team in the league, if you love to watch hockey: Welcome to Canada.

In Montreal (AKA my home town), our team is the Montreal Canadians/Habs and our colors are red, blue and white. This city goes insane for their Habs, I am not joking. The Bell Center, which seats a cool 21 000 people, sells out almost immediately for regular season games and instantaneously for playoffs. The games also get broadcast on every sports channel, good luck finding any other sport on TV on game day!

With this many loyal fans there is a whole culture that goes with it. They want to connect with their fans in many more ways than just on game days and they make a valiant effort. A few examples:
  • Youtube channel (link below) where players compete in small challenges
  • 24CH - reality TV show which shows you behind the scenes (seriously amazing and addicting)
  • Give young fans opportunities of a lifetime by inviting them behind the scenes to meet the players, skate around the ring carrying the torch and lighting the ice on fire (link to video below)
They also work with a lot of charities, especially the Montreal Children's Hospital, and help them raise a lot of money. Last season, when the Habs were playing away games, they aired the game at the Bell Center and charged $10 per ticket, all of which went to charity. It is nice to see a team not only play well, but also recognize the influence and power they have and use it to help good causes and make as many people as they can happy.

I can't wait for this season to start and to get back into the hockey spirit! GO HABS GO!
